Here you'll find our first must-do detour to Aoraki / Mount Cook, the gateway to a host of spectacular hiking tracks, both short and long. AORAKI / MOUNT COOK TO CHRISTCHURCH Back at the turn-off, the route takes you to the foot of Lake Tekapo, the perfect spot to pull up your camper for a spell of crisp mountain-air stargazing. Your journey then heads north-east to Christchurch, the South Island's largest city and a hub of modern architecture following its re-building boom after a devastating earthquake in 2011. CHRISTCHURCH TO THE CATLINS Then it's southward down the Pacific coast, where you can stop to check out the blue penguin colony in Oamaru or the spookily naturally spherical boulders on Moeraki Beach as you near Dunedin. Continue south through the wonderfully remote Catlins region, a land of forests, abundant wildlife, sandy beaches and waterfalls.
