By this time, comedy collective Monty Python had released two original movies in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Life of Brian, plus two others — And Now for Something Completely Different, which was just a collection of clips from the TV series, and Live at the Hollywood Bowl, which was much the same, but done live: Rather than taking on another historical epic, the Python crew — Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin — went bigger and bolder and tackled the subject of life itself, in what was rather aptly titled The Meaning of Life. What's it all about? What does religion have to do with it? Why does the machine go "Ping"? Should OF LIFE you accept just one little wafer thin after-dinner mint after a rather sizeable repast? The long-awaited local release of the 20th anniversary edition of 2001's trip into the life of a young guy who's plagued by visions of a giant rabbit with bad intentions features two 4K discs, plus a DVD of bonus stuff. Two 4K discs? Yep, because as well as the slick restoration in 4K made from the camera negative of the original cut, which has been supervised and approved by director Richard Kelly and cinematographer Steven Poster, there's also the 20-minute longer director's cut to enjoy. Bonus bunny! Out Sept 7 This time last year, we were treated to the first four Star Trek movies in a 4K collection. Great news for fans is that not only are individual editions arriving this month, but the two classic Trek movies that were missing from that set - The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country — are also being made available in 4K Ultra HD for the first time, along with the Director's Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Much like their counterparts, these have received new 4K scans from the original negatives, and come to us natively at that ratio with Dolby Vision enhancement, plus 7.1 audio. Out Sept 14 October is shaping up to be another exciting month for Aussie collectors of classic movies on the 4K Ultra HD format, with four big new releases on their way. Name-wise at least, they don’t come any bigger than Giant, the Texas-set final movie of the all-too- short career of James Dean. Also starring Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson, the 1956 epic has been given a brand new native 4K restoration.
