Words Paul Jones, Amy Flower & Zoë Radas Vinyl CHART OASIS KNEBWORTH 1996 (2022) TRIPLE VINYL SET “Looking back on it now, it did feel like the end of something as opposed to the beginning of something”. So said Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher after they sold out two massive shows at the Knebworth House estate on August 10-11, 1996. By then they had two killer albums, debut Definitely Maybe, and smash follow-up (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?. The full setlist of 20 tracks comes to us over six sides of classic black vinyl, kicking off with Columbia, and hitting its stride by the Liam-snarled banger Supersonic, with the too-good-to-be-a-B-side Acquiesce sandwiched in-between. Side B kicks off, appropriately, with Hello, before the one-two punch of singles Some TOP TRACK: Supersonic FAST FACT: Noel has claimed that Oasis saw the Knebworth shows as like any other gigs, “In, out, put the kettle on, there’s rider to get through here. That was the ethos.” FAKER BE THE TWILIGHT (2007) 15TH ANNIVERSARY RED VINYL ELVIS PRESLEY THE ESSENTIAL (2007) DOUBLE VINYL SET Pulmonary problems never sounded as good as the topic for a summer smash sung with the throaty abandon of Nathan Hudson – lead singer and songwriter for Sydney fourpiece Faker. But it was a whole two-and-a-bit months after the release of the album from which This Heart Attack came – Be the Twilight – that the track suddenly leapt into Oz’s full awareness, spurred by its number five placement in the Hottest 100. Hudson has said the song is “largely about how f-cked up I can get in my head, turning things over and putting myself through torture.” Not torturous is the album’s legacy, derived from its bright and jangly guitars, and Hudson’s jugular, slightly unwashed, occasionally fauxarrogant vocal delivery. Some of Be the Twilight’s material is kinetic enough to make The Hives jealous (Lazy Bones, Don’t Hide, Dumb Mistakes), but Hudson wasn’t afraid of a plaintive bop either (Kid, Please Try Harder). In a well-deserved celebration of the album’s 15th anniversary, Be the Twilight‘s first-ever vinyl pressing arrives this month, on blood-red wax. Known to many as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll – or simply just “The King” – Elvis Aaron Presley recorded nearly 800 songs during his two-decade career. This compilation delivers 28 of the best, kicking off with energetic debut single That’s All Right Mama. The first two sides in this four-sided set deliver such legendary 1950s tracks as Heartbreak Hotel, Blue Suede Shoes, Hound Dog, Don’t Be Cruel and Love Me Tender – and that’s all in a killer five-song block that rounds out side one. Side two brings smashes All Shook Up and Jailhouse Rock, while also touching on Presley’s more tender side with Are You Lonesome Tonight? and Follow That Dream. The second disc keeps the hits coming, with classics from Presley’s movies ranging from Return to Sender to the essential Viva Las Vegas. With hits drying up, Elvis got experimental following his 1968 Comeback Special. This gave us such classic side four tracks as the politically-charged In the Ghetto, and a rousing cover of singer-songwriter Mark James’ Suspicious Minds. We say goodbye via Presley’s final US top ten single, the upbeat Burning Love – and what a hunk, a hunk of hit it is to go out with! Rabid fans may question the absence of some tracks, but as an intro to Elvis this compilation definitely nails its brief. TOP TRACK: Don’t Hide FAST FACT: Comic duo Hamish and Andy parodied This Heart Attack in 2008 in a track called The Last Line Was Crap, which poked fun at the original’s meaningless vocable “Ah-ah, ah-ah.” 14 Might Say and Roll with It. The trend continues as the sides keep coming, with album tracks and B-sides bumping up against big hits – a storming Cigarettes & Alcohol, Morning Glory, Whatever, the massive Wonderwall and Noel-sung Don’t Look Back in Anger all kicking it big in the live arena, before main set finale Live Forever. The encore saw The Stone Roses’ guitarist John Squire join the boys for a massive Champagne Supernova singalong, and traditional Oasis gig closer, a cover of The Beatles’ I Am the Walrus. Truly capturing Oasis at their strongest, both performance and songwriting-wise, Knebworth 1996 is a must-have live album for any fan of top rock ‘n’ roll.
