Day 2. Negombo This morning is at leisure to unwind. Our sightseeing will begin late this afternoon. he Ctuise along the calm waters of the jungle-fringed Negombo Lagoon at sunset before enjoying a delicious BBQ dinner. Day 3. Negombo - Dambulla - “BD Habarana This morning we tour Negombo, visiting the fish markets. It's fascinating to see the variety of seafood available, fresh from the morning's catch. We head to Habarana stopping at the Cave Temples of Dambulla, built by King Valagamba in the 1st century BC. This temple complex houses approximately 150 statues and paintings of Buddha, some of Sri Lanka's most important religious art. Day 4. Habarana “BD We visit the ruins of Anuradhapura, the largest and oldest of Sri Lanka's ancient cities, dating back to the 6th century. Anuradhapura was the political and religious capital for over a thousand years. The ancient city is hidden within dense jungle and is home to the world's oldest tree, Sri Maha Bodhi. We'll then explore the Ritigala Medicinal Forest, home to streams, pools and granite boulders leading to ruins with various meditation platforms. Day 5. Habarana “BD We begin with a visit to the medieval capital of Polonnaruwa. Built alongside a large artificial lake, the city is brimming with archaeological treasures. We'll discover the well-preserved ruins of palaces, stupas, bathing pools and exquisite rock sculptures of Buddha. This afternoon we'll enjoy a jeep tour in Minneriya National Park to get up close with the Sri Lankan wildlife. The park's central feature is the ancient Minneriya Tank, built in the 3rd century by King Mahasena. During the dry season (June-September) elephants come to graze and bathe in the water. Day 6. Habarana @ “BLD Today we explore the famous rock fortress of Sigiriya - ‘Lion Rock’. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed site was formed by magma from an extinct volcano and was home to Buddhist monks for centuries. It is one of Sri Lanka's most impressive sites and is located on top of a vast 200-metre-high granite rock, some 1,200 steps up! e Visit a local village near Sigiriya and be welcomed into a local home fora traditional lunch. Day 7. Habarana - Matale - Kandy We begin our journey to Kandy, stopping at the Matale Spice Plantations en-route. We will also visit the Coconut House, to see how a local family utilises every element of a coconut tree. In Kandy, we'll visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. The temple houses one of the most sacred relics of Buddhism - a tooth of Buddha, collected from his funeral pyre. Day 8. Kandy “BD Today is dedicated to exploring Kandy, Sri Lanka's cultural heart. We'll stop at the Royal Botanic Gardens of Peradeniya, where exotic crops including coffee, tea, nutmeg and cinchona were first tried and tested. Later, “BD “BD we'll enjoy a guided tour of Kandy before being treated to a cultural show and traditional dance performance, including the cobra and mask dance. Day 9. Kandy - Nuwara Eliya The main hill resort of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya is the heart of Sri Lanka’s lush-tea growing region. We board a local train this morning for a scenic ride en-route to Nuwara Eliya. We'll visit a tea plantation and factory to discover how Sri Lankan tea is produced, from picking the leaves to selling the tea, before enjoying a few samples. Day 10. Nuwara Eliya *B Colonial past and current-day Sri Lanka fuse in Nuwara Eliya to create one of Sri Lanka's most unique destinations. We discover the town during a guided tour before venturing out of town to see the St. Clair and Devon Falls that cascade down the lush green mountains. We'll enjoy a lovely high tea at the Grand Hotel before an afternoon at leisure. Day 11. Nuwara Eliya- Udawalawe- BD Yala We make our way to Yala this morning, stopping en-route to witness the gushing water of the incredible waterfalls at Ella before continuing on to Udawalawe. * Spend time at the Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe and learn about its rehabilitation program. Day 12. Yala National Park “BD Enjoy a morning at leisure before embarking ona safari in Yala National Park - the oldest and best-known of Sri Lanka’s national parks. Its diverse habitats are home to elephants, wild buffalo, deer, black bears, macaques, jackals and a variety of birds. It's also believed to have one of the highest-density leopard populations in the world. The national park also boasts a large number of important cultural ruins indicating previous civilisations. Day 13. Yala - Weligama “BD We make our way along Sri Lanka's beautiful south coast to the Dutch colonial town of Galle. Here we'll take a city tour and visit its UNESCO World Heritage-listed sea fortress. We'll then visit a hatchery that conserves the turtle population and also witness the unique stilt fisherman as they go about their trade. Day 14. Weligama “BD We enjoy a scenic cruise along the Madu River, watching locals go about their daily lives. Look out for the 46 different species of birds in the area, as well as huge water lilies and colourful butterflies. We'll then visit Sri Lanka's largest moonstone mine at Meetiyagoda. The moonstones found here are renowned for their blue shine. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure. Day 15. Weligama - Colombo “BLD We make our way to the island nation’s capital, Colombo, today. Facing the Indian Ocean, Colombois a bustling city that has retained its charm, including tree-lined boulevards, colonial buildings and temples. % Visit Gradely Cinnamon Estate for a tour of the property and a delicious cinnamon- infused lunch. In Colombo, we'll enjoy a guided tour of the city, with a visit to the Gangaramaya Temple. Tonight we enjoy a group farewell dinner. Day 16.
