JB UNCOVERED S E S A E L E R H S E R F SE REVIEWS MUSIC GET IN ON THE Hot Chip Freakout/Release Freakout/Release's opening statement Down isn’t immediately recognisable as Hot Chip. That is, until Alexis Taylor’s endearingly earnest vocal and those unexpected, quirky percussive flourishes – Hot Chip’s secret sauce – join the party. “If you choose to remember me/ Hold me gently as you fall asleep…” – Eleanor’s tender lyrics (another glorious Hot Chip trademark) warm the cockles. Featuring reassuring synth and what sounds like glass-bottle percussion, used sparingly – we’re left aching for more! – this standout track’s lyrics also share the delightful fact that Samuel Beckett used to drive André the Giant to school. Throughout album number eight, Hot Chip address the fact that many among us feel Broken and Miss the Bliss of our carefree, pre-pando raving days. Then gently pulsing closer, Out of My Depth – which channels the wistful tone of LCD Soundsystem’s All My Friends – floats in like a loving reminder for our future selves: “When I’m in my darkest place I must be careful not to dwell there.” (Domino) Bryget Chrisfield DC Gore All These Things Hailing from the creative hub of South London, indie star-inthe-making DC Gore pairs '80s synth-pop with sharp social commentary. All These Things is the former Little Cub frontman’s debut solo record, opening with the sound of waves crashing onto the shore as a bubbling synth introduces Millennium People, a six-minute political lamentation set to a new wave backbeat. Gore alternates between charming and selfdeprecating, his understated vocal giving room for a cascade of synths to be unveiled over the course of the album’s nine tracks. A buoyant energy gives the record an undeniable rhythm, compelling the listener to dance whilst Gore’s lyrics subtly demand your attention. (Domino) Holly Pereira Soccer Mommy Sometimes, Forever Sophie Allison – who writes and performs under the musical moniker Soccer Mommy – has unveiled her third studio album, another addition to a discography which is equal parts cathartic and heartbreaking. Sometimes, Forever is a crucial sonic leap forward, Allison experimenting with industrial sounds on Unholy Affliction as she deviates from her tried and tested indie rock. Darkness Forever is another slick noise-pop number with lyrics that reference Sylvia Plath, as Allison reconciles with a heavy period of her life while finding comfort in the idea of destruction. The album ends with the strippedback Still, on which Allison is accompanied by a lone guitar as she sums up her inability to “feel things small” with devastating detail. (Loma Vista/Virgin) Holly Pereira D E R E V O C N U B J ON THESE FRESH RELEASES GRAB A COPY AT Lauv All 4 Nothing It seems the “inner child meditation work” Lauv dabbled in during the making of this, his second album, has paid dividends – and prompted squaring off with some personal demons. The multi-instrumentalist and producer weaves arragements with a spry hand, poignant soundscapes opening into glowing, juicy beats filled with nervousness/excitement, like standing on the edge of a waterfall while your crush beckons from the jewel-blue pool below. Opener 26's thick and bittersweet synths accompany lamentations about time and youth (“26 and rich – how the hell did it come to this?”). Time After Time emerges from a darkened ocean, synths matching beat to create ominous pockets of quiet. But nowhere does Lauv peer more deeply inside than on Hey Ari, a candid letter to self calling out destructive habits and wantonly heart-on-sleeve behaviour, accompanied only by acoustic guitar. Another luminous win for the young Californian. (Virgin) ZKR DUNE RATS Real Rare Whale Dune Rats return with their third studio album Real Rare Whale featuring the singles Up and What a Memorable Night. Available on CD, neon green vinyl and limited edition lenticular pink vinyl. Out now. I PREVAIL PANIC! AT THE DISCO Platinum-certified and twice Grammy nominated Michigan rock powerhouse I Prevail return with their new album True Power. Available on CD and JB HiFi Exclusive “Down To The Bone” vinyl.
