It’s not | looking good for 97 per cent of Australians, who reported eye concerns in Optometry Australia’s 2022 Vision Index. Between long days of screen use, weekends in the sun and age-related conditions, there’s plenty to keep an eyeon, ‘Mina You, daily operations manager at the Australian College of Optometry, says some conditions are more common with age. “General eye health can deteriorate with age,” Mina says. “For example, from around age 40, many start to have trouble with reading and focusing on nearby objects as our ability to focus deteriorates with age.” If you feel your eyesight faltering, you're not alone — 81 per cent of Australians have difficulty seeing things far away, while 76 per cent have difficulty seeing things close up, according to the 2022 Vision Index. Even if you feel like nothing is wrong, Optometry Australia Professional Services Advisor and Optometrist, Lyn Hsieh says optometrists visits should be routine every 2-3 years — ‘or more for those with existing eye conditions. “Comprehensive eye examinations at regular intervals starting from childhood, ensure that most eye conditions and other health conditions can be detected early, prevented or corrected,” she says. Eat well ‘More than eating carrots to see in the dark (although Mina says there is truth to this), a healthy diet gives your eyes the nutrients they need. “A well-balanced diet that is rich inavariety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can provide the necessary nutrients for maintaining good eye health,” Mina says. “For example, vitamin A from carrots and sweet potatoes are good for night vision. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish can help with dry eyes.” Wear sunglasses Slide on some shades to protect your eyes from Australia’s harsh rays. “Opt for sunglasses with lenses that meet the Australian standard, falling into category 2 or 3, which provide medium and high protection respectively,” Lyn says. Be screen savvy Staring ata screen all day? Take regular breaks. “It’s easy to forget to take a break from the screen when consumed by an important task. However, regular breaks reduce the risk of digital eye strain and fatigue,” Lyn says.
