Day 1. Depart Australia Day 2. Arrive Tokyo Welcome to Tokyo, Japan's buzzing capital. Formerly known as Edo, a small local fishing village, the Tokyo of today is a vibrant metropolis renowned for its advanced technology and diverse fashion sense, intermingled with the ancient traditions of Japanese culture. After we check in to the hotel, we'll have the rest of the day at leisure to unwind after our flight. Meet your fellow travellers during a welcome drink tonight Day 3. Tokyo “BLD Today is an exciting and fascinating day, dedicated to exploring Tokyo. We begin with a visit to the scenic and spacious Imperial Palace East Garden, which provides a calm oasis amid the bustle of Tokyo. he Experience a sumo wrestling demonstration before savouring a traditional Chanko-Nabe (a sumo. hotpot-style stew) lunch at a local restaurant. This afternoon we'll stroll through the shopping district of Ginza. We'll also experience the hustle and bustle of Shibuya, including the famous Shibuya crossing - one of the busiest in the world! We take to Tokyo Bay and admire the city lights on a dinner cruise this evening ina typical Japanese- style houseboat. Day 4. Tokyo Tokyo's downtown Shitamachi district is home to an array of sights, culture and a great mix of old and new. Today we'll explore the district's Asakusa Senso-ji Temple. This Buddhist temple is one of Tokyo's most colourful and popular. We'll stroll Nakamise- dori shopping street, one of the best places in Tokyo to purchase souvenirs. Next, we'll learn the age-old culinary art of making sushi and enjoy the results for lunch. The rest of the day is free for you to enjoy at leisure. Day 5. Tokyo - Hakone This morning we'll visit a former farming village, lyashi-no-Sato Nenba, recently reconstructed and reopened as an open- air museum and traditional craft village complete with restaurants, shops and galleries. We'll then arrive in the mountainous town of Hakone, where we'll enjoy a cable car ride on the Hakone Ropeway and see incredible views of the iconic Mt Fuji (weather permitting). Tonight we will stay in an authentic ryokan guesthouse, where we'll sleep on traditional Japanese-style bedding made up of a futon bed on top of tatami mats ‘on the floor. We will also have the chance to bathe in a natural onsen (hot springs) and enjoy a traditional Japanese dinner. @ Inight: traditional ryokan guesthouse Day 6. Hakone - Matsumoto - Nagano Today we'll travel to the mountainous city of Matsumoto, where we'll visit its beautiful castle, one of Japan's premier historic castles built in the 16th century. ty Delve into Japanese cuisine during a soba noodle making class in Nagano. After learning all about these delicious buckwheat noodles, we'll visit the historic Old Battlefield of Kawanakajima, where the famous provincial battle took place in 1561 Day 7. Nagano - Takayama We travel to the historic town of Takayama. This city retains a traditional touch, especially in its beautiful old town. We'll explore the narrow streets on foot. Highlights include “BL “BD ¥~B ¥~B Takayama Jinya, a traditional Japanese building dating back to 1816, and the Sanmachi Suji District, lined with old-style merchant houses that are used as sake breweries, shops, and restaurants. Day 8. Takayama - Shirakawago - Gokayama - Takayama One of the biggest morning markets in Japan, the Miyagawa Open Air Market is a feast for the senses. We visit the market this morning before making our way to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed site of Shirakawa-go with its famous gassho-zukur' like hands in prayer’) thatched roofs, designed to withstand the massive winter snowfalls. This afternoon we discover the traditional art of Japanese Washi papermaking in Gokayama. Day 9. Takayama - Kyoto “~B Travelling by bullet train, we make our way to historic Kyoto, Japan's cultural capital. This ancient city was the imperial capital of Japan for over 1,000 years. It was destroyed by many wars and fires but has since been rebuilt and today is considered Japan's cultural capital Enjoy a tasting experience at a local sake brewery in Kyoto and learn how Japan's drink of choice is made. Later today we'll explore the incredible tunnel of orange Torii Gates that make up Kyoto's famous Fushimi Inari Shrine, dedicated to the god of rice and sake in the 8th century. Its resplendent orange Torii Gates are a sight to behold, numbering more than 10,000 as they wrap themselves around the base of the Inari Mountain. Day 10. Kyoto Discover more of Kyoto today starting with a morning walk along Philosopher's Path. Named after Nishida Kitaro, one of Japan's most famous philosophers who meditated along the path while walking to university every day, the path is an enchanting and peaceful place in the city. hy Delve into the stunning art form of Japanese black ink calligraphy and try your hand at perfecting this ancient art. Next, we'll experience a Japanese tea ceremony before spending the remainder of the day at our leisure. Day 11. Kyoto “B Uncover more of Kyoto today, with a full day at leisure to explore your own pace. Why not visit the Gion district? Once regarded as the entertainment region, Gion is best known as the home of Geisha and Maiko. Day 12. Kyoto - Hiroshima Our day begins at the stunning Kinkaku-ji Temple (Golden Pavilion). The temple's top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf and the pavilion is set amongst beautiful gardens. We'll then enjoy a typical Buddhist lunch before touring the stunning UNESCO World Heritage-listed Tenryu-ji Temple, ranked first of Kyoto's five great Zen temples. Later we'll walk through the otherworldly Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and visit the Togetsukyo Bridge before travelling to Hiroshima by bullet train in the afternoon. Day 13. Hiroshima - Miyajima - Hiroshima Cruising to the tranquil and sacred Miyajima Island today, we'll see the giant Itsukushima Torii Gate. This afternoon we'll visit some of Hiroshima's important sites, including Peace Memorial Park, the Atomic Bomb Dome, and the very moving Peace Memorial Museum, commemorating the dropping of the atomic “BL *B “BL ¥%B bomb over Hiroshima. Day 14. Hiroshima - Osaka “BD This morning we travel by bullet train towards Osaka and visit Himeji Castle, Japan's largest and most-visited castle. It is regarded as the finest surviving example of Japanese castle architecture. te Learn the way of the warriors of pre- modern Japan, the Samurai, during an interactive lesson. Tonight we'll enjoy a Japanese-style group farewell dinner. Day 15. Depart Osaka Today we begin our journey home. Day 16. Arrive Australia “*B Please note: From June 2019, Miyajima's famous floating Torii Gate is undergoing renovations for which a completion date has not been set. During the renovation works, the Torii Gate will be covered under partially transparent scaffolding. A bridge is being built on the left side of the gate to aid the renovation works.
