Day 1. Depart Australia Day 2. Arrive Tokyo Welcome to Tokyo, Japan's dazzling, ultra-modern capital city. Meet your fellow travellers during a welcome drink tonight. Day 3. Tokyo BLD We begin the day with a visit to the Meiji Shrine, an oasis in the heart of the bustling Shibuya district, dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji. This afternoon we'll experience the neon lights and hustle and bustle of Shibuya. te Experience a sumo wrestling demonstration before savouring a traditional Chanko-Nabe (a sumo hotpot-style stew) lunch at a local restaurant. This evening we'll enjoy dinner cruising around Tokyo Bay in a typical Japanese-style houseboat from the Heian period, known as a Yakatabune. Day 4. Tokyo - Nikko - Sendai “BL This morning we'll wander the beautiful gardens of Ashikaga Flower Park, including the breathtaking 'Great Miracle Wisteria’ over 140 years old. We will then see Toshog Shrine, the final resting place of Tokugawa leyasu, who ruled Japan in the 17th century. This lavishly decorated shrine complex consists of more than a dozen buildings set in a beautiful forest. This afternoon we'll travel by bullet train to Sendai. Day 5. Sendai-Matsushima-Sendai ™BD Our day begins with a journey through the unique and fascinating islands of Matsushima Bay, ranked as one of the country's most scenic views. Regarded as one of northern Japan's most important Zen Buddhist temples, Zuiganji Temple is our next stop. Enjoy some time at leisure to explore the Ishinomaki Genki Market before we try our hand at painting a Kokeshi Doll, a traditional doll dating back to the late Edo Period. * Experience the local cuisine of Sendai with the option of sampling the local delicacy of gyutan (beef tongue) at a special dinner. Day 6. Sendai - Morioka “BD (Tsunagi Onsen) Today we explore the Iwate Prefecture at the easternmost point of the island of Honshu. * Admire the impressive waterfalls, rock formations and limestone caves of Geibikei Gorge on a scenic boat trip. En-route to Morioka, we'll visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Buddhist temple of Chison-ji, founded in 850 according to the Tendai sect, and the golden Konjiki-do Hall. After lunch, we will visit the Motst-ji Temple, known as being one of the few remaining pure land or ‘Buddhist paradise’ gardens in Japan. Tonight we'll experience a traditional ryokan hotel; a unique style of accommodation with tatami mat floors and authentic cuisine. We'll sleep on traditional Japanese-style bedding made up of a futon bed on top of the tatami mats on the floor. We will also have the chance to bathe in a natural onsen (hot springs) and enjoy a traditional Japanese dinner. @ 2nights: Traditional ryokan hotel Day 7. Morioka “BLD We start our day by visiting Tezukuri-Mura, where we'll tour the Japanese Cultural Arts and Crafts village. Here we'll try our hand at indigo-dyeing using traditional techniques under the watch of skilled artists. Next, we explore the Morioka Castle Ruins Park, the original construction started in 1598, but partially burned down in 1634 and was in ruins in the Meiji period. In 1906 the ruins were turned into the park we'll see today. * Take part in the local Wanko Soba tradition ata lunch in Morioka. Now that you're sufficiently fed, it’s time to enjoy Japan's most famous beverage, sake as we tour the Asabiraki Sake Brewery. Day 8. Morioka (Tsunagi Onsen) - Oga- Akita te Explore the Aoyagi Samurai Manor Museum, discovering the rich history and way of life of the samurai and their wealthy families. Making our way to Oga, we'll stop at the Mount Kanpuzan Rotating Observatory before visiting the Shinzan Folklore Museum. We'll then learn about the fascinating legend of Namahage and the tradition of its yearly festival at the Namahage Museum. Day 9. Akita - Hirosaki - Aomori (Ajigasawa Onsen) Tsugaru Neputa Village is our first stop today, to see the exhibits of local crafts and enjoy a shamisen live music performance. Pe Tour Hirosaki Castle and witness the breathtaking beauty of its Botanical Garden. Built in 1611 by the Tsugaru clan, the three- storey castle tower, its fortified moats, castle gates and some of the corner turrets have stood the test of time, while others have been reconstructed. The Botanical Garden features 23 different zones, 124,000 trees and 1,500 species of plants. Enjoy dinner upon arrival in our hotel in Ajigasawa Onsen Day 10. Aomori BLD Sit back and enjoy the scenic drive through the beautiful Japanese countryside as we journey to the Oirase Gorge, one of the most beautiful river valleys in Japan. Continuing, we will discover the majestic Lake Towada, the largest double-crater lake on the island of Honshu. The water here is so clear, you can peer down more than 10 metres! We'll observe fantastic vistas from the Hakka Toge Observation Deck. Day 11. Aomori (Ajigasawa Onsen) - Hakodate This morning we'll visit the Sannai Maruyama Site before boarding the bullet train for Hakodate on Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido. Upon arrival we will stop at Onuma Park to explore the stunning lakes and islands of this quasi-national park. Day 12. Hakodate Ashort walk this morning and we'll arrive at the Hakodate Morning Market, with free time to check out the many different stalls. Next, we'll also visit Gorydkaku Tower, which provides fantastic views over the star-shaped fort below. Later, we'll head to the Motomachi district at the foot of Mt Hakodate before visiting the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse. This evening, we'll take the Hakodateyama Ropeway to the top of Mt Hakodate and enjoy fantastic views of the city and surrounds. Day 13. Hakodate - Sapporo This morning we take the train north to Sapporo, famous for its ramen and beer. hy Discover the history of beer making in Japan and the famous Sapporo Brewery at the Sapporo Beer Museum. Our day concludes with a visit to the Hokkaido. Shrine. Day 14. Sapporo “BD We'll tour the port city of Otaru on Ishikari Bay, and explore its beautifully preserved canal “BL “BLD *B *B *%B area. Otaruis also famous for its glass and we'll visit the original Kitaichi Glass Sangokan in a converted warehouse. As well as a place to shop for souvenirs, it is also famous for its grand hall, lit with one-of-a-kind oil lamps. This evening we'll enjoy a group farewell dinner. Day 15.
