A WORD OF ADVICE WITH A é orld Quiglg HAY FEVER Hay fever, known medically as allergic rhinitis, is characterised by sneezing, running nose, swelling of our nasal mucosa, itchy eyes and increased production of tears. These symptoms arise as a result of allergenic material landing on the delicate surfaces le our nasal cavity. If that nasal tissue isn't healthy, with a coating of mucus over the top surface and so-called ‘tight junctions’ underneath, an inflammatory response commences, resulting in mast cells releasing histamine, which in turn causes those uncomfortable symptoms. Allergenic material might be dust, pollen, mould or animal dander. The challenge then is to keep that nasal tissue in great shape, thereby reducing the risk of an inflammatory response. The secret is irrigation — a simple strategy using strictly isotonic saline that doesn't contain a preservative. Additionally, if you use any sort of nasal spray, either prescribed by your doctor or over-the- counter, the results are far more. satisfactory if they are used 10 minutes or so after the saline irrigation, which cleans the surface. Don't be fooled into making your own salty water. Normal saline is 0.9 per cent sodium chloride. The term ‘isotonic’ specifically refers to a solution that is buffered to the PH of our cells and blood. Look after your nose — it's important!
